First you need to install backing boards in the region of the fireplace. Now place the new mantel. It is important to put mark on the top and sides of the fireplace mantel. Measure the hollow spot positions for pin point accurately available right at the back of mantel. Mark the same measurements onto wall. Use a stud finder to mark the stud positions behind the wall.

Adjust a wooden board of preferred size for top support and fix it to the wall using screws. This procedure should be repeated for fixing side pieces. Now adjust and fix the mantel on wooden strips.
